| | This afternoon, I found out that my paternal grandmother went to be with our Lord.
She was spectacular.
My grandmother was one of those rare beings that God placed on earth
for the betterment of those around her. A lovely human being, she
possessed a levity about her; she could always be seen with a smile or
a laugh. She was a physician who loved taking care of her patients and
providing a safe haven for them. She was an evangelist to those around
her and never let an opportunity slip to share the good news of Christ
to others - He was her hope and she wanted that hope for others as well.
God was so good to us for sharing part of her 87 years with us. The
last ten were hard; her mind was ravished by Alzheimer's, her
contagious laugh oddly silent. Once in a while you could get a glimpse
of that twinkle in her eye but the life that once possessed her entire
being was no longer there.
My uncle spent the last ten years of his life devoted to her care. The
loss is especially poignant for him. He was selfless in his giving and
his grief is intangible.
I rejoice for my grandmother, though. I know that God is welcoming her in heaven... with a red bean popsicle and a great big smile for a life well lived.
